Histopathology

Our histopathological services encompass surgical pathology, immunohistochemistry, cytopathology and autopsy pathology. We analyze tissue samples following processing to arrive at a definitive diagnosis which will assist in patients management and prognostication. Ancillary tests such as histochemistry, immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence are done if necessary to reach a definitive diagnosis.

Surgical Pathology:

Specimens/samples that are removed at surgery are assessed macroscopically and representative sections are taken for processing before microscopic evaluation. Our diagnoses answer questions as to the nature of the lesions as well as a host of other important information necessary for patients’ management. Is it inflammatory? Is it a benign or malignant tumour? If malignant (cancerous), are the tumour margins free? Biological markers that are targets of molecularly directed therapy are applied as necessary.

Autopsy Services

Consultation on autopsy related activities that include hospital and medicolegal autopsies, embalment and mortuary services are available on request.

Genetics/Cytogenetics:

DNA fingerprinting for individual identification, paternal/maternal disputes as well as for other medicolegal purposes are available.

Karyotyping for sex determination, screening and diagnosis of diseases such as Down syndrome, Klinefelters, and ambiguous genitalia, recurrent pregnancy wastages, and other dysmorphic and congenital abnormalities can be done in our laboratory. We also offer karyotyping for cancer screening and diagnosis.

Cytopathology:

The practice of diagnostic cytopathology in the hands of our experienced pathologists could provide a rapid, accurate and timely diagnosis in the management of patients. It encompasses the art of aspiration cytopathology and exfoliative cytopathology.

Exfoliative cytopathology includes:

  • Papanicolaou smear (cervical smear) – to detect premalignant cervical lesions
  • Peritoneal (ascitic) fluid
  • Pleural fluid
  • Urine
  • Bronchial washings
  • Joint fluid
  • Nipple discharge

Fine Needle Aspiration cytopathology (FNAC) includes:

  • Breast lumps
  • Thyroid mass (such as goiter)
  • Lymph nodes
  • Skin nodules
  • Soft tissue masses
  • Bone masses
